Gay and Lesbian Adoption & Fostering Issues
Training for Staff
Is your agency ready for lesbian and gay adopters and foster carers? The passing of the Adoption and Children Act amendment allowing joint adoption by same-sex couples has finally brought adoption law into line with current practice. The debate in Parliament brought the issue to the attention of the media, birth parents, adoption agencies and of lesbians and gay men.
What we Offer
We offer tailor-made training courses for adoption and fostering agencies. Our aims are:
- To give accurate information, expose myths and explore the nature of prejudice as it affects lesbian and gay parents and carers.
- To examine concerns about what's in the best interests of looked-after children.
- To help you develop strategies for recruitment of lesbians and gay men.
- To enable you to examine the suitability of the assessment process for lesbian and gay applicants.
- To guide you in how to deal with media prejudice and adverse public opinion, including opposition from birth families.
- To explore the ways social workers can be better equipped to support lesbian and gay adopters.
- To promote approved lesbian and gay adopters to looked-after children's social workers.
